REVOLT Powerline Concerns Health Hazards Need UK Energy Policy

Text of North Yorkshire County Council Press Release 10/07/00

A DECISION on the routing of a controversial line of pylons through North Yorkshire which was taken by the county council and Hambleton District Council has been upheld by Stephen Byers, the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry.

Both the county council and Hambleton refused consent for the Lackenby-Picton-Shipton overhead line where the proposed route would pass within 100metres of properties at Rounton Gates, north of Northallerton.

The Secretary of State has agreed with the two authorities that the position of one of the pylons would have a seriously overbearing visual impact on the view from Rounton Gates Cottages.

He has indicated an alternative route, very similar to the route proposed by the county council.

National Grid will now have to get agreement with the landowner for the alternative route. The county council is pleased at the Secretary of State’s decision who agrees that this particular pylon, in this particular location, was not acceptable.
