PRESS RELEASE STRICTLY EMBARGOED TO NOON Thursday 11.7.02

As pylons are now appearing, Revolt has issued the following public statement. There is much more information on www.revolt.co.uk where a more detailed statement will also appear.

A public information statement from
REVOLT (Rural England Versus Overhead Line Transmission)
REVOLT AGAINST UNNECESSARY PYLONS

50 miles of unnecessary giant pylons are going up from Teesside to York, after all-party local opposition and ten years of inquiries, blunder and misinformation. It all started with the Enron power station on Teesside and culminated in the scandal of Enron's corporate collapse.

The public inquiries accepted that the new lines are not strictly necessary. They are National Grid's commercial choice enforced by compulsory powers. The existing line from Teesside to York is only used at 20% of its capacity, i.e. 80% is free, even at winter peak.

Market distortion enables National Grid to profit from promoting more power stations in the far north to serve the south. The unnecessary new Picton - Shipton line will promote the waste of energy worth 500 million pounds per year.

Decisions were taken against the will of the people. Inquiries were misled over financial and technical details. The democratic process has not been seen to be fair or just.

Revolt's position:

Revolt opposes excessive, unnecessary and intrusive powerlines. In particular we oppose the new 35-mile line from Picton to Shipton (near York). We do not oppose the new 15-mile Lackenby - Picton line in Teesside, which replaces a smaller (275 kV) line through residential areas. We also call for removing the existing 400 kV line from Norton to Picton, via west Yarm through residential areas, which abandoning the Picton - Shipton line would enable.

What next?

After March 2003 Secretary of State can review and remove the unnecessary new line. Some landowners continue to resist the new line despite National Grid pressure. They deserve support. Revolt continues to monitor health issues and is pursuing potential human rights legal action.
